Is Amazon Prime Worth It in Canada? The Break-Even Math for 2026
Amazon Prime costs $99 a year or $9.99 a month in Canada. Whether it pays off depends less on shipping than on how you pay for it and what else you already subscribe to.

We worked out the monthly versus annual break-even, the DashPass overlap, sharing and sales tax, using Amazon’s and DoorDash’s own published prices.
The short answer
Amazon Prime is worth it in Canada if you would keep it for at least 10 months and use two or more of its main perks: free delivery, Prime Video or DashPass. If you would pay for DashPass anyway, Prime costs only $3 a year more and adds everything else. If you only shop during big sales, pay monthly for the month you need and cancel.
Amazon Canada lists Prime at $9.99 a month or $99 a year, plus applicable taxes, with a 30-day free trial for eligible customers, according to its June 2026 Prime Day announcement. Twelve monthly payments come to $119.88, which is 17.4% more than the annual fee.

Monthly vs annual: the 10-month rule
The annual plan is a bet that you will keep Prime for most of the year. Here is how the two compare depending on how long you stay.
| Months you keep Prime | Paid monthly | Annual plan | Cheaper option |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | $9.99 | $99.00 | Monthly |
| 3 months | $29.97 | $99.00 | Monthly |
| 6 months | $59.94 | $99.00 | Monthly |
| 9 months | $89.91 | $99.00 | Monthly |
| 10 months | $99.90 | $99.00 | Annual, by $0.90 |
| 12 months | $119.88 | $99.00 | Annual, by $20.88 |
Prices before tax. Monthly cost = $9.99 x months kept.
The line sits between 9 and 10 months. If you are not sure you will still want Prime next summer, monthly is the safer choice. If you have kept it for a year already, the annual plan saves you $20.88.
What each way of paying costs in a year
Prime has more pricing options than most people use. Two of them cut the cost roughly in half.
| Option | Yearly cost before tax | With 13% Ontario HST |
|---|---|---|
| Prime, paid monthly all year | $119.88 | $135.48 |
| Prime, paid annually | $99.00 | $111.87 |
| Prime annual, shared with one adult (per person) | $49.50 | $55.94 |
| Prime for Young Adults, paid monthly | $59.88 | $67.68 |
| Prime for Young Adults, paid annually | $49.00 | $55.37 |
HST applied to each monthly charge, rounded to the cent, then added up. Your own receipt shows the tax actually charged where you live.
Sharing through Amazon Family
Amazon’s July 2026 Amazon Family announcement says a Prime member can invite one other adult in the household to share Prime benefits at no extra cost. Shared benefits include free Prime delivery, Prime deals and events, Prime Video, Amazon Luna and DashPass. Amazon says Amazon Family is free to set up.
If two adults in one home each pay for Prime, one of them can cancel. Split two ways, the $99 fee is $49.50 each. One limit: Prime Young Adult members cannot share their benefits this way.
Prime for Young Adults
Amazon offers Prime for Young Adults with a six-month trial, then $4.99 a month or $49 a year. Paying annually saves $10.88 over 12 monthly payments. Check eligibility on Amazon’s sign-up page before you choose the regular plan.
The DashPass overlap most people miss
DoorDash said in September 2025 that Amazon Prime members in Canada get DashPass with their membership on a continued basis. DoorDash’s Canadian DashPass terms list the stand-alone price at $9.99 a month or $96 a year.
That changes the math for anyone who orders food or groceries through DoorDash:
- You pay for DashPass annually ($96). Switching to Prime annual ($99) costs $3 more a year and adds Prime delivery, Prime Video and the rest.
- You pay for DashPass monthly ($119.88 a year). Prime annual covers DashPass and costs $20.88 less.
- You do not use DoorDash. This perk is worth nothing to you, so leave it out of your math.
DashPass gives $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees only on orders that meet the subtotal minimum DoorDash shows for each store. Small orders may still carry fees.
Delivery: when the shipping alone pays for it
Free Prime delivery is the main draw, but the savings are hard to pin down. They depend on how often you order and whether your orders would ship free anyway.
Same-Day delivery is one place where the numbers are public. In its August 2024 announcement, Amazon said non-members could choose Same-Day Delivery for $11.99 per order in the areas it serves. Prime members got it free on eligible orders over $25, or $6.99 under $25. At those prices, the $99 fee covers itself after 9 Same-Day orders in a year.
Same-Day prices are from Amazon’s August 2024 announcement and may have changed. Check the delivery options at checkout.
Five years of Prime
Over five years, the payment choice adds up. Paying annually costs $495 before tax. Paying monthly the whole time costs $599.40, or $104.40 more. With Ontario HST, the totals are $559.35 and $677.40.
Prime prices can change, so treat these as today’s prices carried forward, not a forecast. Compare this with the other services you pay for in our look at what streaming subscriptions cost over five years.
A quick way to decide
Your Amazon order history and bank statements have the answers.
- Count last year’s ordersLook at how many you placed and how many would have shipped free without Prime.
- Check what you already pay forIf DashPass, or a second Prime membership in your home, is on your statement, Prime or Amazon Family can replace it.
- Pick how to payKeeping it 10 months or more: pay annually. Only for a sale or a busy month: pay monthly, then cancel.
Who should and should not pay for Prime
Prime makes sense if you order from Amazon most months, watch Prime Video, use DoorDash, or can share one membership with another adult at home. Two or more of those and the $99 fee is easy to justify.
Skip it, or go monthly, if you order a few times a year, rarely watch Prime Video and do not use DoorDash. Subscribe for the one month you need, such as a big sale, and cancel. Then check your next bank statement to confirm the charge stopped. If a recurring charge keeps going after you cancel, our guide to reversing a pre-authorized debit explains your options for that type of payment.
The same thinking applies to other paid memberships. We ran similar numbers for the Costco Executive upgrade and Apple One bundles.
