Is a Costco Executive Membership Worth It in Canada? The Break-Even Math
The Executive membership costs $65 more a year than Gold Star and pays back about 2% of what you spend. That makes the break-even easy to find. The harder part is knowing which of your Costco spending actually counts.

We went through Costco Canada’s own reward terms and worked out where the upgrade pays for itself, how sales tax moves the line, and the purchases that quietly don’t count.
The short answer
A Costco Executive membership is worth it if you spend more than about $3,250 a year, before tax, on purchases that earn the 2% reward. That is about $62.50 a week or $271 a month. Below that, Gold Star is cheaper. Once you count the sales tax on the upgrade fee, the line moves up to about $3,670 a year in Ontario.
Costco Canada charges $65 a year for Gold Star and $130 for Executive, both plus applicable taxes, according to its membership terms. Upgrading from Gold Star or Business costs an extra $65, prorated for the months left on your membership.
The break-even, worked out
The reward is about 2% of eligible pre-tax purchases. To earn back $65, you need $65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250 of eligible spending in your reward year.
Sales tax changes this a little. You pay tax on the membership fee, but the reward is calculated on pre-tax prices. So the true break-even is the fee with tax divided by 2%:
| Where you live | Upgrade cost with tax | Eligible spend to break even | Per week |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before tax | $65.00 | $3,250 | $62.50 |
| Alberta and territories (5% GST) | $68.25 | $3,413 | $65.63 |
| Ontario (13% HST) | $73.45 | $3,673 | $70.63 |
| Nova Scotia (14% HST) | $74.10 | $3,705 | $71.25 |
Tax rates shown are examples. Check the rate charged on your own membership receipt. Figures rounded to the nearest dollar or cent.
What you net at different spending levels
Assuming all of the spending is eligible and before tax, here is the reward minus the $65 upgrade cost for a year.
Hypothetical examples. Reward = 2% of eligible pre-tax spending, capped at $1,250 a year. Net = reward minus the $65 upgrade fee before tax.
The $1,250 cap only matters if you spend more than $62,500 a year at Costco on eligible items.
The spending that does not count
This is where most people overestimate the reward. Costco Canada’s Executive reward terms exclude several things that can be a big part of a Costco bill:
- Gas. If you fill up at Costco every week, none of it earns the 2%.
- Pharmacy and prescriptions, plus the food court.
- Services, including auto services and Costco Services.
- Gift certificates and Costco Shop Cards.
- Taxes, deposits, environmental fees, tire installation and disposal fees, and home delivery charges.
- Tobacco, charitable donations, third-party insurance and postage stamps.
- Regional exclusions: liquid milk and cream in Quebec and Nova Scotia, and all pharmacy and optical items and services in Quebec.
A household that puts $8,000 a year through Costco but spends $3,000 of that on gas and prescriptions has $5,000 of eligible spending, not $8,000. That still clears the break-even, but by $35, not $95.
Things people overlook
- The reward arrives once a year, as a coupon. Costco mails it to the primary member about two months before the membership expires, with the renewal notice. It can only be used in a Canadian warehouse, not online, and cannot be cashed out or replaced if lost.
- The last three months roll forward. The reward counts purchases up to about three months before renewal. Spending after that goes into next year’s reward.
- Downgrading cancels the reward. Costco says it will refund your membership fee at any time if you are dissatisfied, but Executive members who downgrade or cancel and get a refund receive no reward.
- Both cardholders’ spending counts. Purchases by the primary member and the free household card (anyone over 16 at the same address) both count, including at Costco warehouses in the US and online at Costco.ca.
- Online prices can be higher. Costco.ca purchases earn the reward, but on the October 2026 flyer items we compared, Costco.ca prices ran $3 to $11 above the warehouse shelf. See our Costco online vs warehouse comparison.
The $10 monthly Same-Day credit
Costco Canada also lists a $10 monthly credit for Executive members on one Costco Same-Day order of $150 or more, which is delivered through Instacart. Unused credits do not roll over. If you already order Same-Day at least once a month, that could be worth up to $120 a year on its own. If you shop in the warehouse, it is worth nothing, so we left it out of the break-even. Compare the Same-Day price with what you would pay in the warehouse before counting it as a saving.
A quick way to decide
Your Costco receipts and online account show what you spent last year.
- Add up last year’s receiptsUse the purchase history in your Costco.ca account or the app.
- Subtract gas, pharmacy and food courtAlso remove gift cards, services and anything else on the excluded list.
- Compare with your break-evenAbout $3,250 before tax, or $3,670 including Ontario HST. If you are clearly above it, upgrade. If you are close, stay on Gold Star.
Who should and should not upgrade
Upgrade if Costco is your main grocery and household store, you buy big-ticket items such as appliances, TVs or tires there in a given year, or you run a small business that buys supplies at Costco. A single $1,500 appliance earns $30 on its own.
Stay on Gold Star if you mainly go to Costco for gas, prescriptions or the occasional bulk run, or if two people would rather share one Gold Star membership with a household card than pay for Executive.
Frequently asked questions
How much do you have to spend at Costco for the Executive membership to be worth it?
About $3,250 a year in eligible purchases before tax, which is $62.50 a week. Because you pay sales tax on the $65 upgrade but earn the 2% on pre-tax prices, the break-even rises to about $3,673 a year with Ontario’s 13% HST.
How much is a Costco Executive membership in Canada?
$130 a year plus applicable taxes, compared with $65 plus taxes for Gold Star or Business. Upgrading costs an extra $65, prorated for the months left on your current membership.
What is not included in the Costco 2% reward?
Gas, pharmacy and prescriptions, the food court, services, gift cards and Costco Shop Cards, membership fees, taxes, deposits, environmental and tire fees, home delivery charges, tobacco, donations, third-party insurance and stamps. Quebec and Nova Scotia also exclude liquid milk and cream, and Quebec excludes pharmacy and optical items.
When do you get the Costco Executive reward?
Costco mails a reward coupon to the primary member about two months before the membership expires, with the renewal notice. It can only be used in a Canadian Costco warehouse.
Is there a maximum Costco Executive reward?
Yes, $1,250 per 12-month period, which you reach at $62,500 of eligible spending.
Can I downgrade if the reward is less than the upgrade fee?
Costco says it will refund membership fees at any time if you are dissatisfied, but Executive members who downgrade or cancel and receive a refund do not get the 2% reward for that period.
- Sources, checked October 16, 2026: Costco Canada: Executive 2% Reward terms; Costco Canada: membership terms and fees; Costco Canada: Gold Star membership.
- Method: Break-even = upgrade fee ÷ 2%. Tax-inclusive break-even = $65 × (1 + sales tax rate) ÷ 2%. Net gain = 2% of eligible spending, capped at $1,250, minus $65. Calculated by script. Costco describes the reward as “approximately 2%,” so actual coupons may differ by a few dollars. One Costco page sidebar mentions a reward “up to $1,000”; we used the $1,250 cap stated in Costco’s detailed terms and on its Executive reward page.
