- Date: Monday, October 12, 2026.
- Statutory holiday in: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.
- Not a statutory holiday in: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Many employers there still close, but they do not have to.
- Costco: closed on Thanksgiving Monday, except in Quebec, according to Costco’s holiday schedule.
- Ontario shops: most retail stores must close under the province’s Retail Business Holidays Act. Pharmacies, gas stations and some tourist areas are common exceptions.
- Quebec: most stores and malls stay open.

Hosting for less
- Check the grocery flyers early. Grocery chains often feature turkey and baking staples in the flyer the week before Thanksgiving. Our weekly flyers page links to the current flyer for each major chain.
- Compare unit prices, not package prices. The shelf tag shows the price per kilogram or per 100 grams. It is the fastest way to compare a whole turkey with a turkey breast, or a store brand with a name brand.
- Buy before the long weekend. With Costco and most Ontario stores closed on the Monday, leave the last run for Saturday, not the holiday itself.
