Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec each offer money for solar panels, and the amounts and conditions are quite different. One of them, BC Hydro, shows different maximums on two of its own pages, so we explain what to confirm before you sign a contract.
A solar rebate looks simple until you read the rules that come with it.
Some programs pay per kilowatt, some cap the total, and some come with conditions about your contractor or your electricity rate. Those conditions can matter more than the rebate itself. We checked the official pages for three provinces on October 8, 2026.

Chapter 1
Ontario
OpenHome Renovation Savings: solar panels and battery storage
Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas list up to $10,000 for solar panels and battery storage under the Home Renovation Savings program. It is one of the single upgrades you can claim without a home energy assessment.
The program page gives the headline figure but not the formula. Read the solar page on the program site for the breakdown by system size, and for the equipment and installer requirements, before you request quotes.
Chapter 2
British Columbia
OpenBC Hydro solar and battery rebates
BC Hydro’s rebate page lists solar at $1,000 per kilowatt, capped at $5,000, and batteries at $500 per kilowatt-hour, with caps that depend on whether the battery is paired with solar and enrolled in its Peak Saver program. A separate terms document effective July 29, 2026 lists a single-family solar maximum of $10,000. Because the figures differ between pages, confirm the current cap with BC Hydro before you plan around either number.
- BC Hydro says solar and battery installs need a Home Performance Contractor Network contractor starting June 1, 2026.
- From July 1, 2026 a new self-generation rate applies, and accepting the rebate means accepting that rate.
That second point is the one to read closely. It affects what your system saves you after it is installed, so ask for the new rate and a savings estimate that uses it.
Chapter 3
Quebec
OpenHydro-Québec LogisVert: solar panels
Hydro-Québec’s grant is $1,000 per installed kilowatt, up to 40% of the total cost to buy and install solar panels, when all program requirements are met. That is the clearest formula of the three provinces: a 6 kW system would reach $6,000, as long as that is under 40% of the project cost. Equipment must be new and installed in an eligible home. We covered the other grants in our LogisVert and Rénoclimat guide.
Before you sign for solar
Ask every installer these questions in writing.
- 1. Does your quote include the rebate?Ask whether the price is before or after the rebate, so quotes are comparable.
- 2. Is the contractor on the program’s list?In BC the installer must be in the Home Performance Contractor Network.
- 3. What rate applies to my system?Ask for savings calculated with the current rate, not an old one.
- 4. Who files the paperwork?Find out whether you or the installer applies, and by what date.
- 5. What happens if the rebate is reduced?Get the answer in the contract before you pay a deposit.
