The short answer
Royal Bank of Canada is Canada’s most valuable company, worth about C$392.7 billion when we checked on October 31, 2026. TD Bank (C$284.1 billion) and Shopify (C$283.1 billion) are close behind and almost tied for second. Five of the top 10 are banks. The rest of the top 20 is mostly oil and gas, pipelines, railways, insurers, gold miners and the Brookfield group.
The ranking uses market capitalization: the share price multiplied by the number of shares. It tells you what investors think a company is worth today. It changes every trading day, so treat the exact order as a snapshot.

Canada’s 20 most valuable companies
The top 20 together were worth about C$2.98 trillion. That is 50.8% of the C$5.869 trillion combined value of the 459 Canadian companies tracked by CompaniesMarketCap. The top 10 alone hold 34.1%.

What stands out in the ranking
RBC is in a league of its own
Royal Bank is worth about 2.4 times Bank of Montreal, the fourth-largest company, and makes up 13.2% of the top 20’s value by itself. In US dollars, CompaniesMarketCap puts RBC at US$285.23 billion and ranks it the 57th most valuable company in the world.
Shopify is the only tech company near the top
Shopify is the one technology company in the top 20, and it sits third, less than C$1 billion behind TD. No other Canadian tech firm comes close. Because Shopify shares move much more than bank shares, it can jump ahead of TD or fall back within days.
Energy is spread across producers and pipelines
Four oil and gas producers (Canadian Natural, Suncor, Imperial Oil and Cenovus) and two pipeline companies (Enbridge and TC Energy) make the list. Together they are worth about C$719.6 billion, or about 24% of the top 20.
Gold miners have moved up
Agnico Eagle ranks 11th, ahead of both national railways, and Barrick is 18th. Gold miners’ values tend to follow the gold price, so their place on the list can shift more than a bank’s or a railway’s.
Which sectors dominate
Grouping the top 20 by what they do shows how concentrated Canada’s market is. Banking alone is 38.5% of the value. Add the two insurers and the two Brookfield companies, and financial firms are about 52% of the top 20.
| Sector | Companies | Combined value | Share of top 20 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banking | 5 | C$1.15T | 38.5% |
| Oil and gas | 4 | C$471.7B | 15.8% |
| Technology | 1 | C$283.1B | 9.5% |
| Pipelines | 2 | C$247.9B | 8.3% |
| Asset management | 2 | C$230.2B | 7.7% |
| Railways | 2 | C$213.4B | 7.1% |
| Gold mining | 2 | C$201.9B | 6.8% |
| Insurance | 2 | C$185.7B | 6.2% |
Sector groupings are Gizly’s, based on each company’s main business. Percentages are shares of the top 20’s combined C$2.98 trillion.
This matters if you invest. A fund that tracks the Canadian market leans heavily on banks and energy. Many investors balance that by also holding US and international stocks, which is why all-in-one ETFs hold more than Canada alone.
How RBC’s value has grown
The largest company’s path shows how much these figures can move in two years. RBC’s market value rose 40.9% in 2025 and another 18.4% in 2026 through October, measured in US dollars.
| Date | RBC market cap (US$) | Change |
|---|---|---|
| End of 2024 | US$170.98B | Up 20% |
| End of 2025 | US$240.96B | Up 40.9% |
| October 2026 | US$285.23B | Up 18.4% so far |
Source: CompaniesMarketCap, Royal Bank of Canada market cap page, checked October 31, 2026. These figures are in US dollars because that page reports in US dollars.
Put together, that is a rise of about 67% from the end of 2024 to October 2026. Past changes do not predict future ones, and a falling share price can shrink a company’s value just as fast.
How to read a market cap ranking
A few things change how you should read any list like this one.
- Currency mattersThe same company looks smaller in US dollars. At the rates in our sources, RBC is about C$392.7 billion or about US$285 billion.
- Sources differ slightlyTrackers update at different times. MarketCapWatch and CompaniesMarketCap named the same 17 companies at the top but differed lower down.
- Value is not sizeA company with a high market cap is not always the biggest employer or the one with the most revenue.
- Private and Crown companies are left outOnly companies listed on a stock exchange have a market cap, so firms like Hydro-Québec or privately held businesses do not appear.
How Canadians can own these companies
- Pick an account. A TFSA lets gains grow tax-free, and an RRSP gives a tax deduction now. See TFSA vs RRSP vs FHSA for which to fill first.
- Choose how to buy. You can buy individual shares through an online brokerage, or hold most of these companies at once through a broad fund.
- Consider a one-fund option. All-in-one ETFs hold large Canadian companies alongside US and international stocks, which reduces how much rides on banks and energy.
- Check your readiness first. Pay off high-interest debt and keep an emergency fund before investing. Our guide to starting to invest has a checklist.

Frequently asked questions

They are almost tied. When we checked on October 31, 2026, TD was worth about C$284.1 billion and Shopify about C$283.1 billion, a gap of under C$1 billion. Shopify’s share price moves more than a bank’s, so the two can swap places on any trading day.

Which sector has the most valuable companies in Canada?
Banking. The five big banks make up 38.5% of the value of the top 20. Add insurers and the two Brookfield companies and financial firms make up more than half. Energy is second, with oil producers and pipelines together at about 24%.
What does market capitalization mean?

Can I invest in Canada’s largest companies?
Yes. All 20 companies trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange, and you can buy them through an online brokerage. Many Canadians hold them indirectly through broad Canadian or all-in-one ETFs, which own most of these companies in one fund. This is general information, not a recommendation to buy any stock.
